Photo Sunday: View from the Shard

Love it or loathe it, there are a few things you can’t deny about the Shard:

  1. It’s really big. 309m, to be exact.
  2. It’s now an iconic part of the London skyline.
  3. The views from the top are pretty amazing.

To be fair, I’d always just assumed the views would be amazing, because until today I hadn’t actually been up to see them for myself. If I’m honest, I was also irrationally delighted by the idea that you might actually be able to see where I live (the area, not my actual house) from up there. So when my sister Helen got me a trip for two to the top – try saying that three times fast after a glass of wine – for my birthday, I was pretty excited.

Typically, we’ve both been so busy that it’s taken us several months to find a day we could both do, when the sun was actually shining. But today, we finally made it to the top, and it was amazing.

Our plan was to go for sunset, but being a bit overenthusiastic, we arrived really early. Fortunately, you can stay as long as you like, so we ended up spending just over two hours taking between us about 400 photos of London by daylight, twilight and as darkness began to fall.

I don’t think I need to say any more at this point – you can see for yourself how incredible the views are. A trip to the top of the Shard is not cheap, but I do recommend it if you get the chance. (I wouldn’t bother spending £30 on the commemorative photo though, especially if yours is as terrible as ours was.)

And yes, you can see where I live from up there. We think.
